About the Compassionate Reconciliation website ...

by Els Coenen

March 12, 2021

On March 8, 2021, Suzanne Jordan posted (on the closed FB group ‘Beyond the cage’) the link to the new Compassionate Reconciliation site
When I walked through it many things triggered me. I had a déjà-vue, or better a déjà-feel. I relived the uneasy and uncomfortable feeling that I had while listening to the  JustOutcomes people on Jan 15, 2021 when they presented their approach and planning at the We Are forum of 3HO Europe.

I took some notes and posted them in the 'Contact form' on their site. I forwarded them to the CEO's of KRI, 3HO, 3HO Europe, the coordinator of the National KY federations and the board of our Belgian KY federation. Later that day I shared them on 'Beyond the Cage' where someone asked me to make them available to all. So here they are:

  • Your homepage title mentions: ‘a project of healing, repair and transformation’. What about ‘investigation’? Last January at the ‘WeAre’ event organized by 3HO Europe, we talked about this. You said then that you will not do investigations. My question remains: ‘If you do not want to know all that is broken, what will you repair?’ We all know that the AOB report revealed only part of the harm done. You will address the needs for healing and recovery in youth programs and boarding schools, but what about the harm done to people due to all the other issues: business fraud, under-payment of employees, drug traffic, forced marriages, financial abuse, children taken away from their parents, slander, humiliation, death threats, feelings of betrayal due to so many lies, …? For true healing and reconciliation an overview on the full scope of the harm done is needed, no? If known issues are not named and treated due to whatever reasons, the future will be built on a foundation that still carries unhealed wounds. That is not a strong construction and the puss will come out one day anyway.

  • For the ‘trust’ you seek to rebuild, looking at the total picture, is crucial. Else, when you focus on ‘just the heart attack’ you might lose your patient due the many other injuries he has.

  • You mention ‘the compassionate reconciliation efforts of the SSSC’. If their intention to participate in the healing is serious, then: 1/ why do they still have the picture of a meditating YB as banner on their homepage? That is not very compassionate towards the survivors, is it? 2/ why do they still behave in a realm of ‘secrecy’, for example not willing to be transparent about the financial flows, or about the reasons why they want to remain a religious organisation. (I refer to our questions on the Jan 15 ‘WeAre’ event organized by 3HO Europe.)

  • ‘Inclusion’ is one of your guiding principles you say. After that ‘WeAre’ event, I filled out your online questionnaire. Siri Sant K from 3HO Europe suggested me to do so. I never got an answer on that. Am I ‘excluded’?

  • On the page where you explain about the way of working of the Commission CRC, you focus on the ‘how’ of your approach. From the sparse info you give on the ‘what’, I conclude you will not address any of the issues I mentioned in my first bullet point, right?

  • In the FAQ ‘What is restorative justice?’ you talk about addressing harm within the ‘community’. Will you reach out to those who left too? It would be good to specify what is covered by the notion ‘community’, so that there is no ambiguity about the scope of the project.

  • 3HO Foundation - the way they present themselves is hard to read for survivors. If this yoga was indeed so uplifting and full of compassion, how comes that close to its founder such horrific things happened? How comes people remained blind while practising the yoga of awareness? These are the questions that still many of us have in mind. At this stage of the healing process, I truly belief a more modest and sensitive language would be more appropriate.

  • The presentations of 3HO Europe and KRI are much less provocative to that respect. They do not refer to the past but focus on the offerings and values of today and for tomorrow.

  • The text presented by LYF foundation shows how far away these people are from the survivors. Same for the organisations that follow …

  • The fact that your website only refers to these organisations and contains no link whatsoever to the survivors and their stories makes it very unlikely that you will gain trust with them at this stage of your project. I truly hope you will soon open up to the full scope of the issue. Else it is a waste of time, energy and probably money too…
